Imagine yourself surrounded by great sculptures, modern art paintings and other pieces of contemporary art, listening to great music, and drinking a pint of beer… in a museum. Yes, in a museum.
In the late years, we’ve seen the slow disappearance of the barriers between the different forms of art. If in the past, you would only visit a museum to see paintings, sculptures and photographs, etc… it is no longer the case. Music artists, bands and DJs are now choosing museums as their new music venues. Every music fan knows that the choice of the venue is really important in the whole music experience. Playing in a museum adds more intimacy, solemnity and magnificence to a performance. The audience can really immerse themselves in a 360° artistic experience.
From James Mercer (The Shins) performing acoustically at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, to the Brighton-based band British Sea Power playing at The Natural History Museum in London, lot of musicians have found in museums a new and original way to reach out to their audiences and attract new fans.
Museums are now taking live music to a whole different level.
Last week, the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin hosted a great event featuring some of Ireland’s most innovative creatives: visual arts, film screenings, breakdancing and live music performances. I discovered a great band called Columbia Mills, who, I’m sure, will become big in the coming future. Playing in the main gallery of the museum gave the whole performance an extra frisson.

Hi!! I often visit your site, and this is my first comment to you (I don’t know how this thing works, but I’ll try…) A VERY good article!! Thanks for introducing me to this band 🙂 by the way, good musical tastes!!! It’s a very strange place to have a gig. But whatever, I went once to a gig in the London’s subway from the talented Simple Plan, a very good experience:)!!!
Thanks Lindsay Emily ! Really appreciate your comment 🙂 Please do come visit often, I try to make regular posts. And yes, The Shins rock. And so are Simple Plan ! Cheers
